There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes before a wedding, including writing ceremony scripts for couples.
These past few months I’ve been writing lots of scripts, ready for all the weddings starting at the beginning of October.
Most of the couples I’m working with want a relaxed ceremony, with a mix of meaningful and light-hearted moments, including a few laughs. To be able to tell their love story the way it deserves to be told, I want to hear all about their connection, what makes them the couple they are, their challenges, their experiences together, and what they value about one another
We meet, we talk, I gather stories, and then I go away and start writing. While I have a lot of content to work with, so much of the process of crafting a ceremony is intuitive for me. I think that’s essential for a celebrant, along with being a gifted writer and storyteller.
I send all my couples a draft of their ceremony script. I want to make sure they’re happy with it. I can’t stand the idea of “surprising” them on their wedding day, especially if I’ve made a mistake Their wedding is too important for that. Still, I will ad lib here and there during their ceremony. Not everything is scripted
Every time I email a script to a couple I’m hoping they’ll love it (and that they’ll tell me if they don’t). I’m so grateful for all the feedback I’m receiving so far.
